대명사는 항상 앞에서 먼저 제시된 명사나 대명사를 지칭한다. 대명사의 선행사 (pronoun's antecedent)라 하는에 이 관계를 물어보는 문제가 출시 된다.
1. 모호한 지칭 (Ambiguous pronoun reference)
대명사는 가까운곳의 단하나의 선행사를 지칭해야 한다.
The worker removed the carpet from the room and cleaned it.
>> After removing the carpet from it, the workers cleaned the room.
>> The workers cleaned the carpet, after removing it from the room.
첫번째 문장에서 it이 지칭하는 명사가 앞의 the carpet인지 the room 인지 알수 없다. 따라서 이는 모호한 지칭이며 수정되어야 한다.
※ 잘못된 지칭 (Wrong pronoun reference) : ambiguous
If the meat is too tough for a dog, cut it into tiny pieces.
>>Cut the meat into tiny pieces if it is too tough for the dog.
여기서 it이 지칭하는 명사가 앞절의 the meat인지 a dog 인지 알수 없다. 따라서 모호한 지칭이다.
2. 느슨한 지칭 (Loose pronoun reference)
대명사는 명사나 대명사를 받아야 하는데 가끔 앞절의 행동에 대한 내용을 받는 대명사가 있다. 이런경우 loose reference, 치명적 오류이다.
The big bank organized a major food drive during the summer, and the city supported the initiative with time and money. It really surprised us.
>> The big bank organized a major food drive during the summer, and the city supported the initiative with time and money. The organization really surprised us.
>> The big bank organized a major food drive during the summer, and the city supported the initiative with time and money. The support really surprised us.
첫번째 문장의 It이 지칭하는 것이 놀라운 사실인데, 그 사실은 앞절의 Bank가 한 행동과 the city가 한 행동이 놀라운 사실이라는 것이다. 따라서 어느 하나의 명사를 지칭할수 없으므로 it을 쓸수 없다.
I told my grandmother that I was going to marry Phyllis, which angered my mother.
>> My mother was angry because I first discussed my marriage with my grandmother.
>> My mother was angry because I wanted to marry Phyllis.
첫번째 문장에서 관계대명사 which 가 지칭하는 명사는 앞절의 Phyllis이어야 한다. 하지만 내용상 앞절 나와 있는 "할머니에게 말한 사실" 과 "Phyllis와 결혼하는 사실" 의 두가지 행위를 지칭하는것이다. 따라서 이는 loose reference, 치명적 오류이다.
3. 소유격 (Pronoun to refer to a possessive or an adjective)
The hockey player's goal in the Canada Cup brought him everlasting fame.
>> The hockey player became famous because of his goal.
4. 막연한 You 와 They (Indefinite use of You and They)
말 그래도 You 와 they가 무엇을 지칭하는지 알수 없는 오류
You should not leave the carts on the far side of the street.
>>Customers should not leave the carts on the far side of the street.
They say that the ozone layer is gradually disappearing.
>> Meteorologists claim that the ozone layer is gradually disappearing.
